Make your staircase into a grand statement piece! These stunning and unique Horse Newel Posts are available in left and right sided versions.. If you're making your own staircase and have the space, put one on either side for a REAL WOW factor!
You can opt to include a matching handrail or use one from a staircase kit. Admittedly, it is easier to use the matching handrail as the horses section of handrail is quite a bit smaller than the large handrails that are provided in wooden kits.
The horses short section of handrail is adjustable with heat. I designed the piece so that it doesn’t stick out too far from the stairs (feet level with lowest step), however, if you want it further out and the handrail will line up after the following advice, then you can have it where ever you like.
A sheet containing the information below will be sent out with every order.
Joining the horse with a wooden handrail: Please scroll down to read and follow step 5 regarding adjusting the horses section of handrail before doing the following; As you can see in the photos, heat a thin nail and push it into the horses rail, then into the wooden handrail with a dot of superglue for extra grab. Wait for it to dry. You can then use builders bog or air dry clay to shape the handrails to match.
If using the horse and matching handrail with pre-made stairs and spindles:
- Once you have your stairs, top newel post and spindles in place (temporary fixing is fine as long as the stair angle is exactly what it should be), place the horses feet level with the bottom step. DO NOT ATTACH OR CUT HANDRAIL YET.
- I recommend having a second person to hold the horse in place, with its hoofs flat on the floor (make sure it isn’t leaning back on it’s tail).
- Make sure to have the newel post at the top of the stairs in place and that the 45 degree angle is leaning against it. This will give you the most accurate length of rail that you need once you have adjusted the horses section of handrail.
- Hold the handrail on top of your spindles with the flat end facing the horse. This gives you an idea on how much, if any, you need to raise the horses section of handrail to suit the staircase angle. If the handrail goes past where the horse sits, please adjust the horses handrail section before cutting the main handrail.
- To adjust the horses section of handrail: Using a heat gun (not a lighter as this causes charring) warm up JUST the horses handrail part and a little where it curves around. DO NOT OVERHEAT. If it’s too hot to touch, you’ve heated too much! Please use the test scrap I include with orders to practice heating or painting before trying it on the horse. Once the horses handrail is heated, use your fingers to bend the handrail part upwards just slightly. Make sure to also use your fingers to keep the shape of the handrail. Sometimes while bending upwards, the handrail can squish a bit with the pressure from your fingers. Just reheat slightly and reshape. Place the horse back by the stairs to ensure you now have the right angle. If not, repeat this step until both handrails are the same angle and meet perfectly.
- If your handrail is too long and goes past your horses handrail, you need to cut it. Triple check exactly where you need to cut it for the perfect length (cut the flat end!). I use a mini table saw to cut things like this but a mitre box and Japanese saw will do the trick. A straight, smooth cut is what you want. Depending on how much you need to take off, you may see what’s called “infill”. This is what fills 3D prints to give them strength. Do not stress if you see hollow areas as this is normal and it will still attach well.
- Once you have the right handrail length and the right angle for the horses handrail section, superglue! I do recommend hot glue first as a temporary fix to ensure everything is right before turning to the superglue.

3D Print Care:
Please keep your 3D printed items out of direct sunlight. Depending on the colour, it may fade. High temperatures like full summer sun can slightly soften the filament or resin.
Upon Receiving Blanks:
I do my best to make sure you're receiving ready-to-go pieces by doing a quality check. As I am not perfect, very minor things may get overlooked.
There may be a very slight difference between 2 of the same print. However, these details are so minor that they're only noticable when looking very closely in very bright light.
Priming & Painting:
Before painting, spray the item with a clear plastic primer. I highly recommend Dulux Duramax Plastic Primer Spray Paint. Spray primers will be the easiest to use and just a light coat will ensure your paint will have enough bite. This means your paint is less likely to chip or scratch off.
Use an automotive filler primer if you're after a very smooth surface. Full instructions including how to post-process Wood filament will be sent out with every order.
I use Acrylic paints on my Printed pieces. Gold Leaf paint is my favourite to use when adding touches of gold to the pieces. Rust-Oleum spray paints are also a great option with vibrant, glossy colours if you want to cover the whole piece. Some pieces have very fine details that you may wish to paint, in which case, I like to use a magnifying lamp to help me see all the details.
